"O I say, these are not the
parts and poems of the Body only, but of the Soul,
O
I
say now, these are the Soul!"
-Walt
Whitman, "I Sing
the Body Electric"
Since ancient times, humans
have looked upon the human form with wonder, seeing within it a
reflection
of the order and mystery of all of nature. We have
each at times felt this resonance within our own physical bodies, as a
sudden lightness of foot while dancing to music, a soaring of the the
heart when beholding the majesty of the natural world, a
powerful flash of
gut-level intuition steering our actions, or the delighted first
steps of a child on the Earth.
However, most of us also feel within our physical forms a sense of
dis-ease, perhaps accompanied by pain, tension, awkwardness or
ungroundedness; even stifling emotional or behavioral patterns.
To the extent that we are physical beings, the ability of our
physical forms to find freedom and balance in the changing world around
us will affect the expression of our entire beings, whether as
compressed and rigid or expansive and flowing.
This, then, is the task of Structural Integration: to
discover
and grow the expression of wholeness and unity which is innate to our
human forms, and to release that which restricts and compresses our
structures and our selves. In so doing, we bring greater
freedom,
power,
and balance to our physical bodies, and allow greater expanse in
the other spheres of our being. We experience less pain and
discomfort and a more grounded, upright posture with which to connect
to the world we live in.
